Spin current, i.e., the flow of spin, has attracted much attention during the recent development of spintronics. Spin current is the most basic concept for the transformation and the control of various physical quantities related to spin. Understanding spin current is equivalent to the elucidation of mechanisms for the transformation and the control of the physical quantities, which will lead to the considerable development of spintronics, and furthermore, the discovery of new physical phenomena and the invention of new devices. In this paper, the concept and historical background of spin current will be explained first, and then, the present status and the future of the research will be reviewed.
