Abstract

Optics based on hierarchical structures continues to advance by fusion with other technologies and subdivision into increasing specializing fields. Basic research on new functional materials based on metamaterials and plasmonics is essential. New ultrafast nanosize optical and electronic devices with high density and low power are expected to be developed. Simultaneously, devices acting as interfaces between nanosize elements and macro circuits must be also improved. Through the realization of optical memories and advanced spatial phase modulators using the above devices, new generation optical computer, 3D display and functional optical measurements are expected to be realized. Meanwhile, with improvements of studies on human sciences, it is expected that new fields combining human sciences and medical photonics would be developed with advanced optics.
