Abstract

In this paper, we present a roadmap on the science and technology of ionizing radiation focusing on three fields. In the first field, the high-performance radiation sources of J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) as well as small and medium- size radiation sources and innovative nuclear reactors are discussed. In the second field, the future prospects of novel radiation detection systems using solid-state detectors, scintillators and photodiodes, micro pattern gas counters and cryogenic radiation detectors are outlined. In the final field, cutting-edge applications of radiation to problems related to radiation standards, diagnostic and therapeutic methods, nondestructive testing and analysis, material development, environmental protection, agriculture and energy are surveyed.
