Introduction and future prospects of plant factory that uses light emitting diodes as a light source

Abstract

A plant factory is an advanced plant production system, where food vegetables and ornamental flowers are intensively cultivated. In the cultivation room of a plant factory, air temperature, humidity, light intensity, light period, CO₂ gas concentration and nutrient solution are controlled to meet the optimal conditions of plant growth. Therefore, we can realize high-quality plant production as scheduled year-round. Recently, the application of light emitting diodes (LEDs) as a light source for growing plants has been investigated, and several commercial pilot plants have been developed.
