A single-crystal graphene substrate is a requisite for device applications of graphene. To establish techniques for growing single crystal substrates, an understanding of the graphene growth mechanism is important. For this purpose, we are investigating graphene growth on metals and SiC using in situ electron microscopy. In this paper, we explain the graphene growth processes that have been clarified to date with an emphasis on the segregation/precipitation of macroscopic single-domain graphene on polycrystalline Ni foils.
