The new basic energy strategy of Japan, which is based on the goal of a nuclear phase-out in the 2030’s, has been formulated. Even along with this scenario to reduce the dependency on nuclear power, Japan will need to coexist with nuclear power for longer than 20 years, and there are several significant issues to be solved. In this paper, several subjects for the subsequent utilization of nuclear power in Japan are discussed. In particular, a focus is put on the response to the Fukushima-Daiichi NPP accident, the enhancement of nuclear safety, a necessary solution for the back end issue, the reinforcement of the basic and fundamental study of safety, the maintenance of LWR engineering, as well as the deployment of decommissioning technology.
