Abstract
This study illustrates how designer characteristics influence design innovation. We employ a multiple regression analysis on an individual basis for 25,385 designers, using design rights data from the transportation equipment industry between 1990 and 2018. The analysis reveals that designers with more solo creation experience are more likely to contribute to design innovations in team settings. This study contributes theoretically to design research and product development theory. Moreover, it offers practical insights by suggesting strategies for human resource development in firms to foster design innovation.
