Abstract

Unsafe behavior is a known cause of accidents on construction sites. To prevent unsafe behavior, it is important to proactively encourage safety behavior among construction workers. This study investigated which factors promote safe behavior among construction workers by means of a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire items were selected based on previous studies on safety behavior and promoting factors, mainly internal factors of workers. A total of 510 construction workers responded to the questionnaire. The results showed that workers' "Influence and support of others," "Knowledge and skill concerning work and safety," "Specific recognition and self-awareness" directly or indirectly promoted "Safety behavior." Among workers' "Specific recognition and self-awareness," recognition of the consequences of accidents was the main variable that promotes workers' safety behavior. In future, we intend to propose worksite-level safety measures that improve specific recognition and self-awareness that workers should have to promote their safety behavior.
