For conventional process control, a well-tuned PID controller has been considered adequate. It is, however, questionable whether the PID controller insures that the control system can be operated at the most efficient condition for energy consumption. In this paper, we focus on the tuning problem of the PID controller for energy savings. The controlled plant is assumed a first-order lag plus deadtime system with I-PD control configuration. Comparison of the control performance is presented for load disturbance change. The optimal PID gains can be obtained as functions of ratio of deadtime to time-constant graphically.
