The horn-type transducer at 20 kHz was installed vertically into the reactor. The substrate and enzyme were japanese cedar and cellulase, respectively. The concentrations of total sugar and glucose were measured. The concentrations of total sugar and glucose increase by ultrasonic irradiation. It is considered that the ultrasound physically breaks wood surface and accelerates diffusion of cellulase into cellulose. The increase ratio of concentration by ultrasound for glucose is higher than that for total sugar. The enhancement of enzymatic saccharification becomes larger as the ultrasonic intensity increases.
