Abstract
Non-aqueous suspensions have been preferred for the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) to prevent the electrolysis of the solvent and to obtain a bubble-free deposit. On the other hand, an aqueous system has the advantage of low-cost and low-environmental-burden. As a serious problem, water is decomposed into hydrogen and oxygen when dc current passed through an aqueous media. It is well known that the hydroquinone (HQ) is easily oxidized to quinone (Q). This reaction decreases dissolved and electrolytically produced oxygen. In the EPD process, oxygen produced electrolytically would be consumed by the chemical oxidation of HQ, followed by the bubble-free deposit would be fabricated on an anode. In this study, we investigate the EPD on various anodes of aqueous alumina and zirconia suspensions with HQ and also attempt to fabricate the bubble-free alumina / zirconia gradiented composites.
