Metal surface can be improved in terms of thermal, mechanical and chemical properties by a ceramic coating. The chromium-free corrosion resistance of stainless steel could be achieved by environmentally friendly chemical solution deposition method. Precursor solutions were prepared from tetraethoxysilane with polymer, which were deposited on stainless steel and aluminum alloy by dip coating, and then heat-treated. An addition of polymer such as 0.5wt% of PVB or PMMA to the precursor solution was found to be very effective for preparing homogeneous films free from cracks and pores on stainless steel and aluminum alloy substrates. The corrosion resistance was improved remarkably by the sub-micron silica-polymer hybrid coating on stainless steel prepared at the temperature between 25°C and 200°C. Hardness of silica-PMMA hybrid coating on aluminum alloy was improved by 7% larger than that of non-coated one.
