Alumina-tungsten functionally gradient materials (FGMs) were fabricated by a centrifugal molding technique (CMT). It was found that the mixture of two kinds of sub-micro powder was unsuitable to fabricate the FGM cylinder by means of the CMT, though there was a large difference in density between two constituents. The mixture of metals with different particle sizes was particularly useful to obtain the continuous graduation of FGM cylinders. The gradient control of the radial direction was attained by adjusting the slurry viscosity by the mixture ratio of metals with different sizes. Residual thermal stresses generated during the cooling process were also analyzed. The hoop residual stresses distributed from tensile on the inner surface to compressive on the outer surface due to the gradual material properties of the alumina-tungsten FGM cylinder. The stress concentration on the interface can be relaxed by the continuous variation of the material properties.
