A new-type sensing device based on a stabilized zirconia (YSZ) tube and potassium nitrite was fabricated and its sensing performance was examined for detecting low concentration of NOx at relatively high temperature. The difference in potential between the sensing electrode containing the nitrite and the Pt reference electrode formed on the inner surface of the YSZ tube was measured as a sensor signal. The present sensor was able to detect NO (and NO2) at ppb level at the operating temperatures of 450 - 500°C, although the response rate need to be improved. The detailed sensing characteristics and the sensing mechanism of the sensor will be discussed.
