Abstract
Enhancement of damage tolerance behavior in alumina laminate composites has been investigated using microstructure design approach. In this study, both the pore orientation and the grain orientation are examined for the microstructure control technique in alumina laminate composites. As the microstructure design concept of laminate composites, the porous layer was prepared by the control of pore shape and the microstructure textured layer was prepared by the grain orientation technique. Compared to the alumina monolith specimen, alumina laminate composites with microstructure controlled layers showed more enhanced mechanical properties. It has been observed that the damage tolerance behavior in alumina laminate composites was more enhanced with microstructure textured layer rather than with porous layer.
