Amplification characteristics of lanthano-silicate glasses are estimated by using rate-equation analysis. This glass shows wide emission spectrum at 1.5 μm-band. In addition, concentration quenching was not observed up to 6000 ppm Er3+. The lifetime at 4I11/2 pumping level is about 20 μs, which is comparable to that of silica-based glass. This means that power conversion efficiency with 980 nm pumping is high because excited state absorption (ESA) from pumping level can be suppressed. Prospected gain profiles show that wavelength region with gain larger than 30 dB reaches more than 100 nm. Therefore, the glass in this system possesses high potential to broadband amplifier with high efficiency and short length.
