Abstract
Lead-free crystal glasses are no longer new to the glass world due to the increase awareness towards health and environment. Traditionally, most of the commercial crystal glasses are lead crystal glasses whose have been known for their aesthetic appearances. Their usage nonetheless, creates a lot of controversies as they consist of high toxicity. In this study, lead is substituted with other elements as to get the same or better appearance and properties as the popular lead crystal glass. The focus is made on the boric oxide (B2O3) because of its peculiar behaviour and it is rarely used in the crystal glass formulation. A range of glasses with different concentration of B2O3 was prepared and was melted at 1200°C to 1400°C. The variation in the compositions and melting temperatures of the glasses resulted in different properties and performance of the glass.
