Abstract
We have developed a system for in-situ observation of glass melts under high magnetic field up to 10 Tesla. Thermal convection in a potassium phosphate melt was observed under vertical and horizontal magnetic fields. The velocity of convection decreased to one-third of the initial velocity at above 1 Tesla. It was deduced that different electro-magnetic forces act on positively charged alkali metal ions and negatively charged clusters consisting of PO4 tetrahedra in the melt resulting in the reduction of total velocity of the melt above 1 Tesla.
