This paper summarizes the results of a study on chloride binding in cement pastes exposed to external chlorides. Eleven types of cements of various chemical compositions were tested in this study. The effects of sulfate and alkali contents of cement were also investigated. Preliminary results indicate that other factors beside the C3A content have significant effects on the chloride binding capacity of cement pastes. Also, increases in the sulfate and alkali contents negatively affect the chloride binding capacity. The results also confirm the non-linear nature of chloride binding isotherms. Finally, an attempt is made to correlate the chloride binding capacity with factors such as the C3A, C4AF, and SO3 contents, and the specific surface area of the hydrates.
