Abstract
The current state of economy and progress of sustainable development in Japan has made it more important to provide durable concrete structures economically. Due to current client demands, the required strength of cement has become increasingly stronger. Some have suggested that this trend may be the reason of reduced durability in concrete structures. Returning to the basics, this paper will consider suitable cement for use in constructing durable concrete structures and focus on various concrete properties such as material segregation, heat and strength development, and durability at the same time. For concrete of the common strength class a minimum amount of cement powder content is required to prevent material segregation. However in order to reduce adiabatic temperature rise, it is recommended to replace part of the cement powder content with an inert substitute.
