Discharge of lead into the environment has been strictly regulated because of its harmfulness against the human body. However, some of the wastes containing lead, e.g. in electric devices, have been disposed without removing lead out of the products. The recovery of lead in PZT and PLZT ceramics by using ball mill with H2SO4 solutions was investigated in the present study. The wet ball mill of each ceramic material was performed using a pot mill apparatus for 0-72 h with the rotational speed fixed at 300 rpm. The diffraction lines of PZT and PLZT disappeared completely from XRD profiles, and only the diffraction lines of PbSO4 were confirmed after the ball mill for above 24h. According to ICP analysis, the amount to dissolved lead was restrained under 0.1% of the initial lead content. These results indicate that more than 99.9% of lead in the ceramics can be recovered as PbSO4.
