Abstract
Iron oxide (Fe2O3) was added to mullite, and the effect of iron oxide addition on sinterability and microstructure of mullite was investigated. Open porosity of mullite without Fe2O3 addition was around 8 % at a sintering temperature of 1600oC. In the case of mullite with Fe2O3 addition, densification temperature of mullite decreased with the amount of Fe2O3 addition. From the results of XRD analysis, iron would be incorporated into crystal structure of mullite. Mullite without Fe2O3 addition consisted of fine grains and large grain growth was not observed. In the case of mullite with Fe2O3 addition, elongation of grains proceeded with densification.
