Abstract
Fracture behavior and toughness of discontinuous carbon fiber dispersed SiC matrix composite under mode_I_loading has been investigated. During the loading, micro damage accumulation behavior was observed in SiC phase. Damage accumulation behavior near the notch tip strongly depends on distribution of carbon fiber bundle. A simple model is proposed and the effect of microscopic fracture behavior on apparent fracture toughness was discussed.
