Abstract

Background: We introduced Underwater colonoscopy (UC) to eliminate the discomfort during lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. Between June 2018 and December 2023, we performed UC on 2553 cases and underwater polypectomy including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), hot and cold polypectomy on 2371 cases. We often experienced the difficulty of a secure field of vision due to the bleedings causing to several procedures during UC. Therefore, we applied Viscoclear™ in the examination of colonoscopy.

Materials and Methods: We performed UC in 1217 cases from January 2022 to December 2023, and used Viscoclear™ for 76 cases (6.2%) with the difficulty of secure field of vision due to bleedings during the procedure. They consisted of a biopsy from advanced colonic cancers in 2 cases, EMR in 2 and cold polypectomy in 72, respectively.

Results: We could get good fields of vision during colonoscopy in all of 76 cases. There were no adverse events and complications during the procedure.

Conclusion: The use of Viscoclear™ brought to a safe treatment with a fixation of bleedings and a good field of vision for the case which it is difficult to secure visual field against a bleeding during the procedure of UC.
