A case of common bile duct carcinoma associated with calcification in the tumor

Abstract

A 75-year old female came to our hospital due to upper abdominal pain and fever. Imaging diagnosis including CT-scan demonstrated a calcified mass in the common bile duct and the tentative diagnosis of choledocholithiasis was done. In order to remove the stone, endoscopic mechanical lithotripsy and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy were attempted with no effect. Peroralchoangioscopy, carried out to apply ellectrohydraulic lithotripsy to the stone, revealed the mass to be a tumor instead of the stone. Only calcified specimen was obtained by tumor biopsy ; however bile juice cytology showed class V and surgical therapy was selected. Histopathological findings of the resected specimen demonstrated a well differentiated adenocarcinoma of the bile duct, associated with necrosis and calcification in it. We experienced a rare case of the common bile duct carcinoma like as the stone because of associated calcification in the tumor.
