Abstract
We describe a 34-year-old woman who presented with bloody stool.
Digitalrectal examination revealed fresh bleeding. Colonoscopy showed blood clots and inflow of fresh blood in the proximal portion of the terminal ileum. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging showed a low-signal-intensity mass in the pelvis, indicating heterogeneous contrast enhancement . The patient received transfusions, but the vital signs were unstable. Emergency surgery was therefore performed. A Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor was diagnosed on pathological examination. In Japan, only 10 patients who underwent emergency surgery for small-intestinal bleeding caused by a GIST of the small intestine have been reported previously. We herein describe our experience with this rare case.
