Abstract
In this study, we investigated the clinical and microbiological effects of systemic administration of sitafloxacin for the treatment of acute periodontal lesions in patients with chronic periodontitis. In each of 30 patients with chronic periodontitis, one acute site and one chronic site were subjected to clinical and microbiological assessments. PCR-Invader method was used to detect the 4 periodontal pathogens. The clinical and microbiological assessments were repeated 6 to 8 days after the antimicrobial treatment. Systemic administration of sitafloxacin yielded significant improvement of all the clinical parameters, except tooth mobility. The clinical efficacy rates for pain and suppuration were judged as ʼexcellentʼ. At the baseline, Tannerella forsythia and Treponema denticola were the most prevalent periodontal pathogens from the acute sites, while T. forsythia and Porphyromonas gingivalis were the most frequently isolated pathogens from the chronic sites. The eradication rate was the highest for P. gingivalis, being 72.2% for acute sites and 100% for chronic sites, followed by that for T. forsythia and T. denticola. These results suggest that systemic administration of sitafloxacin is highly effective for the treatment of acute periodontal lesions in patients with chronic periodontitis.
