Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between periodontal disease and the systemic condition in ambulatory patients diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes mellitus in a general hospital lacking a dental department. Data regarding the dental condition were collected from neighborhood dentists. The data included the number of teeth present, the number of decayed and missing teeth, and the diagnosis of periodontal conditions (i.e., healthy, gingivitis, and mild, moderate or severe periodontitis). Hospital records were mined for medical data including subject age, body mass index, results of hematological tests, and the presence of any arteriosclerotic disease or microvascular complications (retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy). There were no statistically significant differences in the blood test results between patients with and without severe periodontitis. However, the odds ratios for severe periodontitis were higher in patients with arteriosclerotic disease and with microvascular complications were 18.7 and 6.38, respectively. It was thus proposed that collaboration between independent general hospitals, neighborhood dental practices and research institutions might yield useful scientific data on systemic and periodontal conditions and on the association between the two in the local area. In addition, the results suggest that the presence of severe periodontitis is an independent risk factor for arteriosclerotic disease and microvascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
