Abstract
Abstract:The Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital of Dentistry received approval in October 2007 from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan, for advanced dental technology with EMDOGAIN® Gel (EMD), in periodontal regenerative therapy. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of periodontal regenerative therapy using EMD as advanced dental technology, and to examine the prognostic factors in therapy with EMD. The study comprised 204 sites of 138 patients. We measured the probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and radiographic bone defect depth at the subject sites. The mean PPD, CAL and bone defect significantly improved one year after surgery. The mean clinical attachment gain was 2.5±2.0 mm, consistent with previous reports. Greater periodontal regeneration was observed at sites with PPD≧6 mm, CAL≧6 mm, bone defect≧4 mm, bone defect angle<29°, a temporary splint, and in non-smokers. The mean PPD and CAL three years after the operation at 101 sites in 67 patients were identical to the results at one year after the operation, confirming that the regenerated periodontal tissue was maintained for three years. Advanced dental technology using EMD might yield satisfactory clinical outcomes in patients with periodontitis. Nihon Shishubyo Gakkai Kaishi (J Jpn Soc Periodontol) 56(3):302-313, 2014.
