We report the effects of Supportive Periodontal Therapy (SPT) following basic periodontal treatment in a patient with generalized chronic periodontitis. Initially, the patient showed indifference to the importance of oral self-care and smoking as the risk of the occurrence and progression of periodontal disease, and was unmotivated to comprehensive treatment, including tooth extractions. However, the patient's awareness and trust relationship improved following non-surgical treatments and subsequent SPT, leading to a deeper understanding of smoking cessation and the importance of comprehensive treatment. Good oral health condition has been maintained to the present. This case report underscores the importance of patient education in periodontal treatment. The providing of sequential information using X-rays, intraoral photos and periodontal tissue examination results led to offer precise guidance tailored to the patient's life background and life stage and contributed to the development of a close trust relationship with the patient. Furthermore, this case reiterates the critical role of dental hygienists in raising patients' awareness of their oral health.
