Prophylaxis against venous thromboembolism consists of pharmacological and physical agents. Although these are of proven efficacy in preventing deep vein thrombosis, complications occasionally occur when these are used uncorrectly. In the present paper, the proper use of elastic stockings and intermittent pneumatic compression, which were active procedures for preventing deep vein thrombosis, was described in accordance with the available scientific evidence.
