New synthetic methods and physical properties of 5-acyl-3-phenyloxazolidine-2, 4-diones are studied.
These compounds have three characteristic absorption bands in carbonyl region of IR spectrum, namely 1830, 1750 and 1720 cm-1. 5-Pivaloyl-3-phenyloxazolidine-2, 4-dione is measured for pka value in 25 percent aqueous cellosolve and is confirmed to be a stronger acid than commonly used couplers.
This fact can well explain why these compounds have high coupling activity in rather weakly alkaline developer.
