Abstract

Molecular weight distribution (m. w. d.) of gelatin gives significant effect on physical characteristics of gelatin. Therefore, it is very important in photographic gelatin industries to control the m. w. d. of gelatin. We have been studying the ultrasonic wave irradiation process as a means of controlling m. w. d. of gelatin and we made it clear that degradation processof component H (the highest molecular weight component of gelatin) was of the first order.
This time, we investigated the degradation process of component H in two different gelatin solutions. Sample 1 contained almost only component H and sample 2 contained other components of gelatin together with component H. From the result, we found that the decomposition rate constant of component H and γ depends on the total concentration.of gelatin solution and no other factors are involved, such as the type or concentration of other individual coexistent components.
