Abstract

HAMON is the design of the tempered edge of the Japanese sword blade. HAMON is the most important factor to represent the sword's beauty and prove that the sword has excellent quality. However, HAMON cannot be taken by standard photography. Generally, HAMON picture is copied by hand drawing. Mr. Okisato Fujishiro is a sword polisher as well as a HAMON photographer. He has been taking HAMON pictures by hand drawing or his own method of HAMON photography. He requested us to develop “HAMON SCANNER” to represent sharper HAMON images. “HAMON SCANNER” was developed based on our image processing technology and added lighting technology. This paper presents the scanner technology which can take high definition HAMON images.
