Abstract

The following facts were confirmed as a result of our inquiry into the tryptophan metabolism in albino rats caused by V.B2 deficiency.
(1) Subsequent to an oral administration of tryptophan to V.B2 deficient albino rats, the xanthurenic acid excreted in their urine was found to be leas as compared with V.B6 deficient albino rats but to be far more than in the urine of healthy rats used in the control experiment.
(2) The administration of tryptophan to V.B2 deficient albino rats produced three distinct phases in blood sugar change, together with diabetic symptoms.
(3) The rising of blood sugar amount could remarkably be inhibited by 5-hydroxy-anthranilic acid.
(4) When examined pathologically and histologically, albino rats fed for a long time on a V.B2 deficient diet containing tryptophan revealed the degeneration of β-cells slighter in its degree than in albino rats suffering from V.B6 deficiency.
