Abstract
Purpose : To investigate the burden of eye diseases in Japan.
Methods : The impact of an eye disease is measured by the number of eye-healthy years of life which are lost through illness, disability and blindness as a consequence of the disease.
Results : The new indicator Eye-HeaLY incorporates blindness and morbidity into a single number.
Conclusion : The methodology may be used to help determine priorities for the allocation of resources to alternative eye-health improvement procedures by estimating the number of eye-healthy years lost.
