Abstract

In human-robot communication, perception is a fundamental factor affecting the way people perceive the robot’s bodily movement and intention. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the diversity of human perception in order to devise proper robot expressions. Two experiments were conducted to investigate a person’s perception of the robot’s voice factor and motion factor. Different levels of perception sensitivity towards robot expressions and human internal reactions elicited by different robot expressions were estimated. Meanwhile, Big Five Personality Scale was used to analyze the results of two experiments for observing the personality of those who possess a similar perception. The results showed that experimental participants can be divided into two groups according to the association between perception similarity and personality, implying that the perception of robot expression is potentially related to personality. The idea that human perception is a significant factor in HRI is clearly supported by the current findings.
