An Improvement on Melody Generation Method in Improvisation System "JamSketch"

Abstract

In this paper, we make an attempt on generating a melodic outline with a variational autoencoder (VAE). So far, we have developed an improvisation system, called JamSketch, which enables users to allow musical improvisation only by drawing a melodic outline on the screen, but users without musical knowledge tend to draw too monotonous melodic outlines, which may degrade the melody generation process. Our method re-generates melodic outlines from user-drawn monotonous melodic outlines with a VAE. Our preliminary results show that our method re-generates melodic outlines from too monotonous outlines.
