Abstract

This paper reports on a collaborative research project titled "Creating AI Humanities." The primary goal of our project is to utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) to bring innovative changes to the research and teaching methods of Western classical studies and to build a foundation for applying these achievements to other fields in the humanities. Western classical studies, in which our research members specialize, is particularly suitable for this endeavor because it has a wealth of academically reliable text data available in open access, allowing for the potential use of AI while ensuring academic credibility and expertise. However, utilizing such data requires preparing the data for input into LLMs, establishing ethical guidelines for their use, and developing educational systems. This paper aims to elucidate the contributions and potential of using LLMs in Western classical studies for both research and education, highlighting the possibilities and challenges involved.
