We investigate the relationship between property crime rates and their proximity to pachinko parlors in Japan. Using 6.5 years of crime data and information on pachinko parlor operations, we examine crime rates in various distances from these parlors (0.5km, 0.5-1km, 1-5km, 5-10km) and during different operational phases (pre-opening, opening, post-closing). Findings reveal that property crime rates were significantly higher in regions 0.5-1 km away from pachinko parlors, compared to those within 0.5 km and 5-10 km. Additionally, crime rates were notably higher during the opening and post-closing periods of these parlors, even when controlling for the density of convenience stores and always-opened pachinko parlors.
