Abstract

Artifact that is made by human is top-down, which is sequentially assembled with detailed parts according to a blueprint. On the other hand, life such as ourselves are bottom-up, in which higher-layer individuals such as societies emerge from interactions of lower-layer individuals such as cells by chance in a hierarchical structure ranked by size.Bottom-up method has advantage of flexibility such as individuals adapt environment beyond ability of creaters, however, bottom-up method is not well established even if it was in simulation environments. Therefore, We proposed the model of a virtual creature composed of cubes which moves and joints in 3D virtual environment. The environment has numerous holes that affect life and death of virtual creaters and we defined that a virtual creature emerges to higher-layer when it overcomes such challenges. As a result of simulation, a virtual creature's body emerged according to hierarchical structure of environment.
