Abstract

There are many self-service udon shops in Kagawa. These shops are popular among both locals and tourists, and have small floor areas with narrow aisles, so the time required for collision avoidance and the occurrence of collisions customers are considered to negatively impact the customer turnover rate. This study proposes the introduction of a pedestrian traffic rule that makes aisles one-way, inspired by the roundabout, a type of circular intersection. Additionally, a multi-agent simulation was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this pedestrian traffic rule. Specifically, the number of human-to-human collisions and the time taken for a set number of people to enter and exit were measured using a well-known udon shop layout in Kagawa. After 30 simulation trials, the results showed no statistically significant improvement in collision reduction or shorter average stay time. This suggests that implementing a roundabout-based pedestrian rule does not benefit the given shop layout.
