Abstract
Larvae of a hermit crab, Dardanus crassimanus (H. MILNE-EDWARDS), were reared in the laboratory from egg to the glaucothoe. Seven stages in the zoeal development have been recognized on the morphological features. In this paper, the zoeal stages are described in detail with figures, and compared with those of allied species of the family Diogenidae. They differ from those of D. arrosor (HERBST), the only species of certainly known parentage in the same genus, in the following characteristics. 1) No scale-like structures on the carapace. 2) No dorsal carina on the base of the rostrum. 3) Only one seta on the antennal endopod in the fourth to the final zoeae. 4) A terminal spine on the exopod of uropod of the same stage zoea. 5) Small body size in the early zoeae.
