Abstract
This research study was aimed at exploring forms of support for certified nurses by clarifying the process that culminates in their acquiring a role. Certified nurses are those nurses who apply advanced techniques and knowledge to clinical practice in specific nursing fields. Systematic support that is appropriate to certified nurses’ specific stage in role development is required to facilitate their assumption of the functions required of their roles. This study consisted of semi-structured interviews of 11 certified nurses who had fulfilled the functions of their roles for more than 5 years. Using Modified Grounded Theory Approach, we analyzed the process until the roles that they had yet to grasp were acquired. Consequently, we established the following five categories: approaching the organization; blending into practice; setting standards for oneself; looking ahead; and Realizing the transfer of support. From this series of processes, blending into practice emerged as the core process. These categories constitute a subjective initiative for certified nurses to deepen their self-awareness by fulfilling appropriate role behavior requirements, while building relationships with managers, colleagues, and other staff, through practice. It was also noted that meaningful vertical support from the director of nursing was highly effective.
