Abstract

This article explores the influence of context on the production of metaphorical expressions, with attention to the interplay among contextual involvement, metaphor conventionality, and rhetorical effect. Drawing on the Asahi Shimbun database and focusing on the metaphor “The Start of Business is the Beginning of a Journey”, this study demonstrates that contextual involvement varies according to metaphor conventionality and that certain expressions are designed to achieve rhetorical impact. Furthermore, the analysis confirms that contextual involvement plays a significant role in the selection process of metaphorical expressions aimed at achieving rhetorical effects, irrespective of their degree of conventionality.
