This study examines differences in advice-giving between Chinese and Japanese speakers, focusing on the resulting negative politeness effects. Statistical analysis reveals that Chinese speakers often provide direct advice, even to less familiar people, while Japanese speakers tend to avoid using “Action-Directing” and limit the use of “Reason-Giving”, especially in less close relationships. Qualitative analysis highlights negative politeness effects stemming from cultural deviations, such as insufficient direction from Chinese speakers or excessive reasoning and unsolicited advice from Japanese speakers.
