Abstract
Intensity of the ground motion in Banda Aceh due to the 2004 Sumatra Earthquake has been estimated by means of the questionnaire-based method. In the whole city area, the intensity takes the value close to the boundary between 5+ and 6- in terms of the JMA seismic intensity. This allows us to conjecture that the whole area suffered similar level of damage due to the ground motion. In order to estimate the structural damage in the area which had been totally flattened by the earthquake-induced tsunami, we conducted the damage survey in the area around the Grand Mosque. The area was considered as a reference, because it had not suffered severe tsunami damage and most of structural damage survey was observable.
