Abstract
The purpose of this report is to show that the design and educational effect of the card game, Paint It Black, could influence the thoughts of players. This game is designed to make players understand that the protection of nature tends to be managed without considering the unequal relationship between nature and human being.
PIB presents environmental protection from a number of community viewpoints including the government, environmentalists and company managers among many others. The aim is to make players aware of the trade-offs which can occur as the result of different environmental protection policies.
We asked a total of 82 students to play PIB and write their ideas on debriefing sheets. The results of these experiments suggest that many of the players recognized the problems associated with the protection of nature and the serious antagonism between the differcnt ideas on nature, such asconservationandpreservation.
However it is not strictly certain whether these results depend on a PIB or whether they are the personal feelings of the subjects tested. Therefore we determined that debriefmg by means of discussion needs to be conducted after the game in order assess any true changes in thinking.
