Abstract
A development involving construction of a reclaimed island off the coast of Awase, in Okinawa, is now being executed. In planning this project, conflicts between local development and ecosystem conservation need to be resolved. The history of industrial salt fields at Awase was studied in terms of local historyand environmental perception. Tidal flats were formerly a symbol of a rich, healthy coastal environment. Inhabitants needed to take an interest in water and coastal sediment quality. Coastal development planning should include more information on endemic natural conditions that draws from historical, local and traditional knowledge sources.
