An emended definition of the fossil diatom genus Rossiella Desikachary et Maheshwari is presented along with a detailed description of its five member species, including two new ones. The stratigraphic range and geographic distribution of each species based on analysis of some deep-sea cores and literature survey are provided. The genus is closely related to the genera Bogorovia Jouse and Koizumia Yanagisawa, but is clearly distinguished from them by the absence of transapical costae. On the basis of certain characteristic features, the genus Rossiella can be placed in the family Cymatosiraceae Hasle, von Stosch et Syvertsen. Two new species are described, Rossiella fennerae Yanagisawa sp. nov. and R. fourtanierae Yanagisawa sp. nov.
